REHOBOTH BEACH — An unknown amount of wastewater sludge overflowed from the city’s wastewater-treatment facility sometime between late Friday night and early Saturday morning, the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control said Monday.
The overflow, a result of Friday’s intense rainfall and ongoing construction at the facility, was discovered around 8 a.m. Saturday, DNREC reported.
Approximately 4,000 gallons of sludge were vacuumed up later that day. The sludge was released into the ground and marsh adjacent to the facility. A coating of lime was applied around the facility Saturday and again on Sunday, according to DNREC.
