CAMBRIDGE - W. Frederick Thomas, 86, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at the Dorchester General Hospital in Cambridge.
He was born in Cambridge on April 23, 1920, and was a son of the late Huffington and Minnie Stack Thomas.
Mr. Thomas graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 16, 1943, until he was honorably discharged on July 27, 1945. While serving in the U.S. Army he attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was stationed in Australia, the Philippines and New Guinea. He was awarded the Philippines Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars.
On June 14, 1947, he was married to the former Frances Smith. She passed away on Sept. 16, 1991.
Some years ago he worked at Frankels in Cambridge. For most of his life he worked for the City of Cambridge at the Department of Public Works. He retired from the Department of Public Works in 1985. After his retirement he worked at Stevens Smith men"s clothing store in Cambridge.
Mr. Thomas was a member of Dorchester Post 91 American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW and Cambridge Elks Lodge 1272. He was a communicant of St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic in Cambridge and enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, coin collecting, gardening and was an avid University of Maryland fan.
He had been in failing health for the past three years and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital since Tuesday.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane T. Collins of Secretary, Julie T. Jones and her husband, Michael Jones of Cambridge; two sons, W. David Thomas and his wife, Carol Thomas of Delmar and Mark A. Thomas and his wife, Lisa Thomas of Cambridge. He is also survived by six grandchildren: Bryan Thomas, Ricky Thomas, Jenna Jones, Ryan Jones, Shelbie Bell and Colin Thomas; one great-granddaughter, Abbey Levesque.
He was preceded in death by a brother Howard Thomas.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church on Glasgow Road in Cambridge with Deacon Robert Paolucci officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge tonight from 7 to 9.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia Society of Maryland, 200 E. Joppa Road, Suite 102 B, Towson, MD 21204.
Pallbearers will be Bryan Thomas, Ricky Thomas, Michael Jones, Gary Cusick, James Lord and Ray Crismond.
