DOVER - Mr. W. Frank Wolfe, born August 13, 1925, in Clarion, Pennsylvania to Abigail Page and Jesse Lloyd Wolfe, passed away on January 17, 2016. He was the youngest of five children. Mr. Wolfe grew up in West Virginia and enlisted in the Navy on his 17th birthday. After training at the Navy Amphibious Base in Little Creek, Virginia, he transferred to England to prepare for the invasion of Normandy. As a crewman on an LCM, he was in the first wave to land troops on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Seven months later he boarded the U.S.S. Valencia (AKA-81) in Baltimore, just in time to deploy to the South Pacific for the invasion of Okinawa. While transporting Marines to Hagushi Beach, Mr. Wolfe was wounded during a kamikaze attack. Incomplete paperwork prevented him from receiving a well-deserved Purple Heart. Mr. Wolfe transited to San Francisco on Valencia to load troops and equipment for the invasion of Japan, an operation that fortunately proved unnecessary. He was honorably discharged on December 15, 1945. Mr. Wolfe was awarded the American Campaign Medal, European Theater Medal with Bronze Star, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Star, Pacific Theater Campaign Action Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, WWII Victory Medal, and the French Jubilee of Liberty Medal. Mr. Wolfe earned his undergraduate degree from the West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he met his wife-to-be, Mary Lou Rogers. He was later awarded a Masters Degree in School Administration from the University of Delaware. Having served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, Mr. Wolfe retired as Director of Secondary Education from the Caesar Rodney School District. During his retirement, Mr. Wolfe enjoyed education-based travel, physical exercise, reading, surf fishing, and the Central Delaware Civil War Round Table. A man of strong faith, he was an active congregant of the Calvary Assembly of God in Dover. His parents, four siblings, and son-in-law, Vincent "Buzz" Chastang, predeceased him. Mrs. Mary Lou Wolfe, to whom he was married for 66 years, predeceased him on January 8, 2016. Mr. Wolfe is survived by his children, Thomas Wolfe and his wife, Julie, Gail Margaret "Peggy" Chastang and David Wolfe and his wife, Megan. Nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive him. A combined memorial service for Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe will be held at a later date.
