DOVER - Verna E. Kirk departed this life Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015 at home, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Kirk was born Jul. 23, 1924 in Zion, Maryland to the late Ross England and Erma Smith England. She was 1 of 13 children, along with her sister ,Vera being the only set of twins. She served in the WAC as a surgical technician for 19 months in the late part of WWII. During her service she received the WWII Victory Medal and the Meritorious Unit Plaque. After the war she worked as a Bell telephone operator in Oxford, PA. She met her husband Donald in 1946 and married in 1947. While their children were young she was a homemaker. After the children were older she went to work for the Caesar Rodney School District in food service for 23 years. She and her husband Donald took great pride in the fact that they built their own home in 1953, in Colora, MD. They cut the trees on their property themselves to use as lumber. Mrs. Kirk enjoyed gardening and sewing, she especially enjoyed making quilts for her grandchildren. She was a part of a group of retired food service ladies who met once a week for coffee. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Daniel T. Kirk. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Donald J. Kirk of Dover; son, Donald J. Kirk, II "Buddy" and his wife Sandra of Corpus Christi, TX; daughters, Pamela Joy of Ashland, OR and Sandi Billings of Dover; son-in-law, Mike Billings of Reading, PA; daughter-in-law, Janice Kirk of Indianapolis, IN; brother, John England of Oxford, PA; sister, Pat Ferguson of Chestertown, MD; 11 grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1PM, Sunday, Dec. 27, 2015 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call from 11-1. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
