FELTON — A 53-year-old Magnolia woman was charged with vehicular assault following a single vehicle, DUI related crash Wednesday morning, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 11:05 a.m., in the area of Indian Point Road and Andrew’s Lake Road. Arriving troopers located a 2000 Chevrolet Lumina, several hundred feet into the woods. Police determined that the driver, Mary A. Williams, was allegedly traveling at a high rate of speed and in a reckless manner when she failed to negotiate a turn causing the vehicle to exit the roadway and strike several standing pine trees.

An odor of alcohol was detected upon contact with Ms. Williams and a DUI investigation ensued, police said. A computer inquiry revealed that she did not have a valid driver’s license, according to authorities.

A passenger in the vehicle, a 59-year-old Magnolia female, was transported to the Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover with serious injuries. Ms. Williams was uninjured, police said.

Charges included first-degree driving under the influence, reckless driving, driving without a valid license, failure to remain within a single lane, failure to have insurance identification in possession and driving vehicle at unreasonable or imprudent speed. Ms. Williams was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court and committed to the Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in New Castle on $4,502 secured bond.
