UMES rallies to edge Hornets 65-64 in men’s basketball

DOVER — Maryland Eastern Shore led for just one minute and 46 seconds but that was enough for the Hawks to pull out a 65-64 victory over Delaware State in MEAC men’s basketball on Saturday afternoon.

Logan McIntosh picked up a steal and hit a free throw to give the Hawks their first lead of the game at 63-52 with 1:46 left. He followed that up with a jumper in the lane with 52 seconds left and the Hawks held on.

The loss was the third in a row for the Hornets (6-9 MEAC, 9-21 overall), which had won four in a row before the current skid. The Hawks are 8-6 in the MEAC, 11-18 overall.

DeVaughn Mallory (Polytech) led the Hornets with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Devin Morgan added 14 points.

It was a tough loss for DelState, which broke out to a 26-10 advantage to start the contest and was still up 41-28 at halftime.

The Hornets shot only 42 percent in the second half. They outrebounded the Hawks, 33-30.

UMES now holds a 67-60 advantage overall in the series.

DelState closes the regular season by hosting Howard on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN, UMES 79, Delaware State 72: The Hornets cut a double-digit deficit to only five late in the game before falling short at home on Saturday.

The loss was the seventh in a row for DelState (2-13 MEAC, 3-25 overall).

The Hawks led by as much as 68-51 early in the fourth quarter before DelState closed within 77-72.

Najai Pollard collected a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets with Lanayjha Ashe adding 17 points.

DelState hosts Howard on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in its regular-season finale.
