MILFORD — Two teens were killed in a car crash early Thursday, south of Milford, Delaware State Police said.
At approximately 12:39 a.m., a 2008 Jeep Patriot was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Coastal Highway, north of Brick Granary Road, approaching a left curve, spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.
The vehicle entered the grass median, traveling north between the guardrails approaching the double-span bridge of Cedar Creek, authorities said. The Patriot struck a grass berm and vaulted into the water between the two spans, landing on its roof, with the vehicle nearly completely submerged.
Once the SUV was removed from the water by multiple Sussex County dive teams and Coastal Towing, two victims were located dead inside, Cpl. Pepper said.
The driver of the Patriot was a 17-year-old male from Dover. The passenger was a 17-year-old male from Camden. Identification is pending notification of next of kin.
The road was closed for approximately four hours, while police investigated and the incident was cleared.
The Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact Sgt. Nicholas DeMalto by calling 302-703-3269. Information may also be provided to Delaware Crime Stoppers via 800-TIP-3333 or here.
