SMYRNA — Police investigators arrested two Smyrna High School students Wednesday night in connection with bomb threats made to the school on Monday.

According to a Smyrna Police Department press release, on Monday morning investigators were alerted to an Instagram account that was used to make threats of clowns committing violence against Smyrna High students. The social media account was immediately shut down and the school was placed on lock down. No explosives were found, police subsequently said.

While investigators were working to determine the source of the threats, an employee of the high school received an email stating bombs were inside the school and also inside vehicles in the parking lot, the release said. The high school was evacuated and explosive detection K9 teams swept and cleared the building.

Smyrna police investigators spent the two subsequent days tracking suspects with computer forensic investigative techniques. According to the release, detectives linked Nathan Carney, 15, of Smyrna and Angelina Gray, 14, of Clayton to both the Instagram threats and the emailed bomb threat.

Through multiple electronic search warrants, Smyrna Police were able to seize evidence that they say directly tied the pair to the incident, police said.

Both Mr. Carney and Ms. Gray have been arrested and are being charged with felony terroristic threatening and conspiracy 2nd degree.

Smyrna Mayor Joanne Masten condemned the students’ actions and said she hopes they are held accountable in a way that is both fair and appropriate.

“I’m very sad that two students elected to do something like this,” said Ms. Masten. “I just hope that both of them learn an important lesson from what they’ve done. I also hope that someone is held responsible for the costs that have been incurred by all the agencies involved.”

Ms. Masten took particular exception to the threat of clowns committing violence allegedly made by Mr. Carney and Ms. Gray.

“I have a very good friend who’s a clown — Snippy Doodles here in Smyrna. She does kids’ parties and shows at The Green Turtle entertaining children and she is scared to death now,” said Ms. Masten.

“I saw her this morning and she said: ‘I don’t know what to do.’ She drives a school bus by day, but by night she’s Snippy Doodles and she does a wonderful job giving back to the community, but now she is afraid someone is going to attack her for being dressed as a clown. This is a woman who’s been doing this for 15 to 20 years.”

Mr. Carney and Ms. Gray were arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 in Dover. Mr. Carney was committed to People’s Place in lieu of $5,000 secured bond and Ms. Gray was released on $5,000 unsecured bond.

Both defendants have been court ordered to have no contact with the Smyrna School District.
