Two-hour Dover standoff results in arrest of wanted Wilmington man

DOVER — A wanted 37-year-old Wilmington male was taken into custody after nearly two hours of negotiations at a hotel Wednesday, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.

Authorities said Donald Miller, 37, sought on charges by New Castle and Wilmington police, was first found to be staying at a room in the Dover Garden Suites at 315 Martin St. at 12:15 p.m. A female and a 17-year-old male (also wanted on a warrant) were in the room, as well, police said.

The Dover police Special Operations Response Team and its Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene, along with a Delaware State Police SORT unit, Sgt. Hoffman said.

The Crisis Negotiation Team established communication via phone with the trio inside the room, Sgt. Hoffman said. The occupants eventually surrendered to police by exiting the room one at a time, police said.

Mr. Miller was sought by Wilmington police for charges connected to a home invasion and for fleeing from authorities, Sgt. Hoffman said. He was also wanted by New Castle County police on firearms and vehicle-theft charges, along with other multiple warrants, police added.

Sgt. Hoffman said it was not immediately known whether any charges would result from the incident at the hotel. The three occupants were transported to the Dover Police Department after being taken into custody.

There was no need to evacuate any of the hotel’s occupants, and police said the scene was cleared by 3:15.

The Delaware Department of Transportation diverted traffic during the incident, while St. Francis Emergency Medical Services also supported the operation, police said.
