MIDDLETOWN — Two individuals died in a motor vehicle crash Sunday on the Sen. William V. Roth Jr. Bridge, authorities said.
According to Delaware State Police, a 2019 Mack tractor-trailer was traveling south in the bridge’s center lane at approximately 10:23 p.m. Because the truck was struggling to ascend the bridge, the operator turned on its hazard lights. Meanwhile, police said, a 2015 Hyundai Elantra traveling in the southbound right lane made two lane changes toward the left lane but struck the tractor-trailer, damaging the trailer’s rear tires and causing the truck to stop in the middle lane.
After the initial collision, the Hyundai pulled over to the right shoulder, while the tractor-trailer remained stopped in the center lane. While stopped, police said a 2010 Toyota Sequoia traveling south struck the truck, causing the Sequoia to catch fire.
The two passengers of the Sequoia were found dead inside of it, authorities said, adding that identification is pending DNA analysis.
The 31-year-old operator of the tractor-trailer was transported to an area hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell said. The 54-year-old driver of the Elantra was not injured.
The south lane of Del. 1 was closed for approximately five hours while the crash was cleared.
The Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate. Troopers ask any witnesses to contact Sgt. J. Jefferson at 302-365-8484. Information may also be provided via Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or here.
