DOVER — Two males were charged in connection with a standoff at the Dover Garden Suites on Wednesday, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.
Donald Miller, 37, of Wilmington, and a 17-year-old male were both wanted by other jurisdictions when located by police at the hotel, he added. They were taken into custody after exiting a room following nearly two hours of negotiations with authorities, police said.
Dover police charged both Mr. Miller and the teen with possession of a firearm/ammunition by a person prohibited, second-degree conspiracy, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest and criminal mischief.
Mr. Miller, who authorities said was sought on unrelated criminal charges, was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on three secured bonds from various police departments — $33,000 from New Castle County, $13,000 from Dover and $12,800 from Wilmington.
The teen, who also was wanted on a capias, was committed to a juvenile detention center on a secured bond, Sgt. Hoffman said.
Police said a female who was in the room was not charged and released from custody.
The incident at 315 Martin St. began at 12:15 p.m., and no evacuations of the hotel were needed, police said.
Special Operations Response Team units from Dover police and Delaware State Police went to the scene, along with Dover’s Crisis Negotiation Team, Sgt. Hoffman said, adding that communication with persons inside the room was established via phone.
Police obtained a search warrant for the room following the arrests, and Sgt. Hoffman said a handgun and loaded magazine were found inside.
The Delaware Department of Transportation assisted in diverting traffic from the area, and St. Francis Emergency Medical Services also responded, police said.
