DOVER — There was no update Friday on the condition of a 41-year-old Milford woman who was impaled by the post of a street sign while riding in a vehicle, Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said.
The incident occurred early Thursday in the area of Del. 1 northbound, just south of Trap Shooters Road, when a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck “(appeared) to (have) driven off the east side of the roadway and struck an ‘END No Stop/Stand/Parking’ sign with the right front of the truck,” Cpl. Fournier said.
“The impact caused the sign to flip over and puncture the floorboard of the truck before impaling the (passenger).”
On its Facebook page, the Dover Fire Department posted that members arrived at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus and found “an extended cab pick up truck with a street sign post that entered through the passengers side floor board, through the passengers right leg and to the ceiling of the trucks cab.”
Following the impalement, police said, the 45-year-old driver, also of Milford, drove to the Dover hospital.
It took approximately 30 minutes to extricate the injured woman from the vehicle, DFD Chief Dave Carey said.
Kent County paramedics, DFD and hospital emergency staff provided medical aid upon the vehicle’s arrival, Cpl. Fournier said. The injured woman was then transported to ChristianaCare in Newark for treatment, Kent County Department of Public Safety Director Colin Faulkner said Thursday.
Cpl. Fournier said Friday the investigation is continuing and no charges had been filed.
