DOVER – Nine downstate teams made the boys’ basketball field while 10 made it in the girls’ basketball state tournament bracket as the DIAA announced the fields for both events on Friday afternoon.
St. Thomas More (17-3) was the No. 2 seed in the boys’ 24-team field while Caesar Rodney (19-1) took the second seed in the girls’ bracket.
The girls’ tournament begins on Tuesday with eight first-round games. The higher seed hosts those contests, which begin at 7 p.m.
In Tuesday’s games involving downstate schools, No. 16 Lake Forest (14-6), hosts No. 17 Milford (12-8), No. 9 Laurel (17-3) hosts No. 24 Delaware Military (12-8), No. 13 Cape Henlopen (12-8) hosts No. 20 Mt. Pleasant (12-8), No. 12 Hodgson (14-6) hosts No. 21 Delmarva Christian (9-11), No. 15 Howard (14-6) hosts No. 18 Dover (9-11) and No. 14 Sussex Central (14-6) hosts No. 19 St. Thomas More (13-7).
CR and No. 8 Sussex Tech (14-5) were among the top eight seeds receiving first-round byes.
In Thursday’s second round, CR will host the winner of the Howard-Dover game while Sussex Tech will host the winner of the Laurel-DMA contest.
The boys’ tournament begins on Wednesday with eight first-round matchups at 7 p.m. No. 16 Caesar Rodney (14-6) hosts No. 17 Cape Henlopen (14-6), No. 13 William Penn (11-9) hosts No. 20 Lake Forest (12-8), No. 12 Milford (12-8) hosts No. 21 Red Lion Christian (11-8), No. 15 St. Mark’s (15-5) hosts No. 18 Indian River (12-8) and No. 11 Sanford (12-8) hosts No. 22 Laurel (12-8).
Woodbridge, Smyrna and St. Thomas More all received first-round byes and will play their first games on Friday night.
Fourth-seeded Woodbridge (18-2) hosts the winner of the William Penn-Lake Forest game, No. 5 Smyrna (12-8) hosts the winner of the Milford-Red Lion game and St. Thomas More will face the winner of the St. Mark’s-Indian River matchup at a site to be determined.
While St. Thomas More has hosted first-round games in the past, criteria for hosting second-round games are more strict. The state tournament committee ruled that the Magnolia school did not meet its six-point criteria for hosting a second-round game.
