Teen struck by train, slightly injured in Cheswold

CHESWOLD — A 15-year-old boy suffered apparently slight injuries when struck by a train while crossing tracks near Twin Oaks Drive early Wednesday afternoon, Cheswold Police Chief Christopher Workman said.

While the youth was “conscious and alert” when police arrived, Chief Workman said he had minor head lacerations and was transported to Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus for further evaluation. Authorities were called to the scene at 1:21 p.m.

Chief Workman said investigation determined that the youth was unaware of the approaching train as he walked toward the tracks. While a train conductor for Delmarva Central Railroad said he saw the boy from a distance and blared a horn while attempting to stop, Chief Workman said a collision couldn’t be avoided. The 122-car train was traveling 10 miles per hour less that the speed it typically moves in the area, Chief Workman said the conductor reported.
