DOVER — When a knife-wielding suspect couldn’t access the cash register he allegedly took an employee’s cell phone before fleeing the Dollar Tree Monday night, according to an arrest affidavit.

Dover Police said Jahmair Melville, 18, was later identified through video surveillance and a photo lineup, and was arrested without incident Wednesday. Charges included first-degree robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, second-degree assault and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony.

After being apprehended, Mr. Melville was presented at Justice of the Peace Court 7 in Dover and then held at James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna after failing to post a $47,500 secured bail.

According to authorities, the alleged incident took place at 8:57 p.m., shortly before the store at 261 N. DuPont Highway closed. A suspect wearing a black hat, sunglasses, black jacket, red plaid jacket, dark pants and black/brown boots entered and was told by a 64-year-old female employee of closing time in about three minutes, the affidavit stated.

The suspect then allegedly displayed a knife and walked toward the employee, who backed up to the cash register, police said in court documents. The employee refused to open the cash register, police said, and the unknown suspect “then forcibly grabbed her by the shirt while still displaying the knife.”

The employee’s cell phone fell from her pants when accosted, police said, and the suspect took it and left. The phone was valued at approximately $100, according to authorities in papers.

Police reported that the employee suffered minor abrasions around the neck area from being grabbed by her shirt, but refused treatment.
