SMYRNA — A 21-year-old Claymont man was arrested after being found with a stolen handgun during a traffic stop Thursday.
According to Smyrna police spokesman Lt. Brian Donner, a patrol officer stopped a pickup truck for registration violations at approximately 3:30 p.m. on U.S. 13 in the area of South Carter Road.
Upon contacting the driver, Richard Massetti and his passenger, probable cause was developed for a motor vehicle search, Lt. Donner said. During the search, officers located a 9mm semi-automatic pistol that was reported stolen to the Wilmington Police Department in 2021 concealed within the vehicle compartment, police said.
Mr. Massetti was arraigned through the Justice of the Peace Court. He was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, receiving a stolen firearm, driving while suspended and operation of an unregistered motor vehicle/failure to transfer registration. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $4,200 secured bond.
