Pedestrian dies in Dewey Beach crash

Posted

DEWEY BEACH — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Sunday after a disagreement in a ride-sharing vehicle.

Sidney Wolf, 43, of Clarksburg, Maryland, was pronounced dead at the scene after he was struck by a 2016 Toyota Corolla in the middle of Coastal Highway, Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell said. Mr. Wolf had been asked to exit a Lyft vehicle by its driver, police said.

The incident began when Mr. Wolf and five of his friends purchased a ride back to their residence in Bethany Beach from a Lyft driver in Dewey Beach at approximately 1:44 a.m. Once the passengers boarded, it began traveling south on Coastal Highway, and an argument began between the group and the driver, Cpl. Hatchell said.

The driver terminated the ride, stopping in the middle of the left lane of Coastal Highway and demanding that all passengers exit the vehicle, police said. While doing so, the oncoming Corolla changed lanes to avoid a collision with the stopped Lyft, but the Corolla’s driver failed to see Mr. Wolf in the road, and he was struck, Cpl. Hatchell said.

Following the collision, the Lyft vehicle fled south on Coastal Highway, according to police. However, the 27-year-old driver of the Corolla pulled over to a controlled stop.

The make and model of the ride-share vehicle has not been determined, but police suspect it was a white Honda Pilot. The operator has not been identified, and the crash remains under investigation.

The additional five passengers of the Lyft were not injured.

The road was closed for approximately four hours, while the incident was investigated and cleared.

Troopers ask anyone with information to contact Master Cpl. Argo at 302-703-3264. Information may also be provided via Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or here.
