One dead in fire east of Dover

DOVER — A 61-year-old man died in a house trailer fire Sunday east of Dover, State Fire Marshal spokesman Michael Chionchio said.

The blaze, reported shortly after 4 p.m., occurred in the unit block of 10th Street, near Pickering Beach Road. The Little Creek Volunteer Fire Co. arrived on the scene as flames were engulfing the residence, according to Mr. Chionchio.

A 67-year-old woman sustained smoke inhalation and was in stable condition at Bayhealth Hospital, Kent Campus.

The trailer was heavily damaged, and state investigators went to the scene to determine the fire’s origin and cause. Damage was estimated at $20,000, Mr. Chionchio said.

Two nearby campers were not damaged.

A total of 63 firefighters from Little Creek, Dover, Bowers, Leipsic, Dover Air Force Base and Magnolia responded, Little Creek Fire Chief Scott Bundek said.

Saint Frances EMS and the Kent County Department of Public Safety were also called to the scene.

A Little Creek fire engine left the station within one minute, 16 seconds of the call’s arrival, Chief Bundek said. The truck arrived on scene within six minutes. Chief Bundek said he arrived to find the single-wide mobile home fully involved, a propane tank venting through a release valve and a small utility storage area involved in fire.

Since March 2020, the fire department has had a crew at the station 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Chief Bundek said.

“The crews clearly made quick work on knocking the fire down and eliminating the hazard,” he said.

The American Red Cross was requested to provide emergency assistance to four displaced residents, Mr. Chionchio said.
