Sperry: Trump’s term becoming demolition derby

Posted

It is hard to list all the damage Donald Trump has done to our country, even before his Iran war, with his provocations, insults and his trade wars, not to mention his grift and that of his family and colleagues. Most distressing is his use of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport not just criminals but anyone undocumented, especially if they are Brown or speak another language. Breaking up families is of little concern. The Iran war has shown us that our military is not at its best under Pete Hegseth’s leadership.

We can no longer be trusted to honor any of our agreements. We are not loved, respected or even feared by those who were once our NATO allies. More recently, he has begun a tariff war with Canada, our nearest and dearest neighbor. Michigan and Maine rely heavily on products from Canada, such as building supplies and steel, and Canada is retaliating.

Trump’s whole second reign has been one of revenge and retribution against all those he feels have not “loved him enough,” including James Comey, Letitia James and John Brennan, among others. He has put sycophants in positions of power who do not believe in racial equality, women’s rights, global warming, the efficacy of vaccinations or birthright citizenship. His concern lies more with his vanity projects: e.g., the destruction of the East Wing to create a massive ballroom, the renaming and renovating of the Kennedy Center, building an American Arc de Triomphe and a granite helicopter landing pad. He seems to have lost interest in resolving the war with Iran, which is affecting the price of oil and fertilizer worldwide.

As the November election comes up, he seeks to weaponize mail-in voting through the post office by inserting last-minute changes to the rules. He is doing everything he can to nullify your vote. His justification is that he is tracking down voters who are not citizens. The fact is that, in previous elections, noncitizen voting has accounted for less than 1% of total vote counts. Another fact Trump seems to ignore is that the Constitution gives each state control of its voting process.

He is threatening to send ICE and/or the National Guard to election sites to intimidate. This is against the Constitution. Trump will resort to any chicanery to stop a Democratic win.

Vote early if you can!
