Speak Up: What concerns you about offshore wind?

Posted

A federal agency has released a final environmental impact statement about a Maryland offshore wind project. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management gave its ratings for birds, whales and local fishing. What concerns do you have about the proposal?

  • Save our shellfish. Say no to turbines! Thank you! — Tara Webb
  • A major concern is having the government force this on us. The scuttlebutt is that the windmill companies have “paid off” numerous coastal towns to keep quiet, and there’s no doubt that governors and the other elected officials are reaping in the dough, as well. — Warren Avis
  • Very little. Most concerns are baseless or trivial, when in the long run, we need to stop dumping carbon back into the atmosphere. — Brian Yurkanin
  • If that is your concern, you may want to speak with China and India. The U.S. only produces 9% of the world’s carbon. Wind and solar are not the answer. — Erich Smith
  • Just because we can’t directly control the rest of the world’s carbon emissions shouldn’t stop us from doing what’s right. We can definitely lead by example. — Brian Yurkanin
  • I get that, but the rest of the world couldn’t care less about us setting an example. Nine percent! Polluting our oceans with these snake oil windmills does more harm than good. Did you know that every windmill contains hundreds of gallons of hydraulic oil? The only ones that financially benefit are the foreign companies that install them. — Erich Smith
  • Landfall! Sussex County, speak up! Broken turbine blades scattering is a hazard to all of us! See Nantucket, Massachusetts’ experience, when one blade broke, and it is still falling apart several days later. Their shellfish are now consuming and filtering little bits of fiberglass to add on to the large pieces of debris floating around and washing up on the beach. Wake up, Delaware, before it’s too late! — Karen Ironside
  • I’m sure that doesn’t happen with boats. — Lori Haggerty
  • Boats never closed beaches. — Karen Ironside
  • Really? Pollution closes beaches all the time. I don’t recall a wind turbine closing any. — Lori Haggerty
  • Beaches have been closed in Nantucket because of broken wind turbine pieces coming to shore. Have you ever stepped on shards of metal or been covered in fiberglass? I can bring you a sheet if you want to give it a good roll. — Kristin Williams
