Speak Up: Student debt forgiveness responses, Round 2

Posted

President Joe Biden visited Delaware State University on Oct. 21 to discuss the federal student loan debt forgiveness program that would allow up to $20,000 in debt cancellation for those who qualify. Since loan forgiveness has featured prominently in other initiatives, such as the Paycheck Protection Program for businesses at the height of COVID-19, why do you think students should or should not get a similar break?

  • What’s next? Mortgage forgiveness? Car loan forgiveness? If you can’t afford something and borrow money to pay for it, you pay it back. — Jane Malaby Bailey
  • We bail out Americans that live in hurricane zones where they can’t even get flood insurance. They also know the risks, so why are we bailing them out? — Eddie Curley
  • That’s what they pay federal taxes for. Not to pay off student loans. Two entirely different things. — Michael Forcade
  • There’s a huge difference between disaster relief and student loan forgiveness. Student loans are used for anything and everything. From books and tuition to rent, cars and parties. By your thought process, we should also cancel food stamps, welfare and Medicaid. — Dennis Mehrenberg
  • There should be no debt relief for students who signed the agreement to pay back what they borrowed. Everyone else has to do it. They are nothing special. — Willie Preacher
  • It is an abuse of taxpayers’ money. Let them pay their own way. No one handed us anything. We worked for it! — Laura Wing
  • Did you have that same energy when they bailed out the mortgage companies, credit card companies, banks, airlines? I’d rather my money go to kids getting an education then a poorly run business. — Eddie Curley
  • I guess you would have preferred to lose your house when the mortgage companies and the banks collapsed? — Michael Forcade
  • I was contracted by the banks to foreclose on homes. Very profitable time. — Eddie Curley
  • I also don’t believe in bailing out a poorly run company. You have to realize, though, that a lot of the financial crisis was because of the government. They had to bail those companies out because they created that mess by making banks lend to people who couldn’t afford houses. — Michael Forcade
  • Students signed a legal contract with a lender who anticipated the money be repaid by them (the borrower)! — Gerard Grega Sr.
  • The lenders are getting/have received their money. When the libs say loan forgiveness, they don’t mean loan default. Your taxes are paying them back. — Dennis Mehrenberg
