Proposed legislation that would require a training course and permit to purchase a handgun in Delaware is sure to evoke a passionate response, local gun sellers said. “I don’t think it will help the crime situations that occur in the cities every night. It’s just going to upset law-abiding citizens,” Smyrna Sporting Goods owner Brian Brown said. Federal background checks — required before purchasing a gun — rose in Delaware from 46,427 in 2019 to 77,057 in 2020, an average increase of around 2,550 per month, according to data from the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, overseen by the FBI. Last year was a historic one nationally, as well — nine of the 10 top weeks for background checks since Nov. 30, 1998, came in 2020. The checks are at least being processed efficiently, according to Mr. Brown.
- All for it, but I want the state to provide the training classes. The NRA has shown total disregard for our government and has worked with communist countries to circumvent our elections. They have sold their souls to the communists. They truly don’t care about the gun owners, or our country. They only care about selling guns and ammunition to anyone, criminals or not. — Dennis Norwood
- When are they going to start taking guns away from criminals, rather than making the law-abiding more defenseless? How the criminals must laugh when contemplating this corrupt state of affairs. — Malcolm Carlock
- Nothing wrong with proper weapon training, and it should be mandatory. — Rick Reed
- I said, “I’d take ‘Legislators Trying to Look Busy for $500, Bob, not $100.’” — Nathaniel G. Hastings
- It’s odd that everyone doesn’t realize that the Second Amendment was written to protect Americans from the hands of a tyrannical government. Yet the same people are so willing for said government to control their lives. America had just freed itself from a tyrannical government that tried to take away their weapons, so the Founding Fathers took it upon themselves to ensure that Americans will forever be able to defend themselves if it were to happen again. And yet here it is happening, and people believe “a well-regulated militia” is some form of government. People, it’s us Americans. Do some research what a militia actually is before trying to state your case with words you don’t understand. — Stacy Johnson
