Speak Up: Dover’s controversial anti-loitering proposal withdrawn

Posted

An effort by members of City Council to pass a new loitering ordinance brought rampant opposition from state and community activists, who claimed it specifically targeted homeless people. Now, after considering those voices, 4th District Councilman David Anderson has withdrawn the proposal, which would have been enforced by a fine but no offense placed on an individual’s record.

  • It seems to me that council representative Dave Anderson is trying to take people’s rights away. The proposed ordinance was obvious that it was a weapon that was going to be used to hurt the homeless of this city. — Ruth Hamilton
  • Ruth, I am most certainly positive that’s not true. It’s intended to protect the citizens from those who would intend harm. I’m not sure what the crime and drug incident rate has climbed to at this point. However, the situation isn’t good. — Lea Smith

What football traditions do you have with your friends and family?

  • Hubby and I will make jalapeño poppers. Sliders. Cheese platter. Some rolled lunchmeat and enjoy. It will be one of the best games yet. Wow. Eagles. Kansas City. — Denise Sloboda Deskiewicz
  • I will be watching with friends and family at my house. Five years ago, we all gathered here to watch. Now that my hubby has passed, we’ll gather and remember him as we watch. — Sandy McDermott Lewis
  • Zero fans in this house. It’s all fixed/rigged anyhow. — Warren Avis
  • By not watching. — Sandy Johnson

There’s a super lot of wagering choices in Delaware

Will Boston Scott score a touchdown or won’t he? How about Miles Sanders or Dallas Goedert? Does Patrick Mahomes throw more than two touchdown passes or less? Jalen Hurts perhaps? Even betting on heads or tails in the coin toss was in play on Super Bowl Sunday. Fans could make those wagers and more than 560 others for the Eagles-Chiefs showdown. Through the Delaware Lottery, a multitude of proposition bets were available at the state’s three casinos for those hoping to cash in.

  • New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia all offer online sports betting. I don’t understand why we can’t do it, too. — Brian Webster
  • But none of these bets can be placed digitally from the convenience of literally anywhere within state lines. — Brett Healy
