Spampinato: Public schools lack accountability, which affects workforce

Posted

Jane Brady wrote an Opinion about the dire condition of public school education in Delaware. She underscores the need for accountability in public education.

I attended a meeting recently of parents who want to open a Catholic high school in Kent County. Parent after parent said an important driver for wanting a new high school is the lack of accountability in the public schools, and none of the local school districts were free of this criticism.

What does it say about our state that parents will do all the work to open a new high school because the public school option is so lacking? Forty years ago, when I was recruited to work in Delaware, I looked at the school options for my children and found them to be acceptable. Would those being recruited today agree to come to Delaware, knowing how poor the education is here?

An educated workforce is critical to the economic health of the state. From Ms. Brady’s letter, it sounds like it starts with the legislature. Let’s do our part to elect legislators who support public school accountability.
