DOVER — Lee Hull says he didn’t treat the recruit any different than the others.
The young man went on an official visit to Delaware State, learned about the school and then sat down with Hull — the Hornets’ new football coach — at the end.
And when the player said he wanted to come to DSU, Hull said he was genuinely excited.
Sure, the fact that the recruit is also Hull’s son, Jordan, made the moment a little more special.
“He said after the visit that this is where he wanted to be,” said the elder Hull. “It was exciting. It was fun.
“He kind of knows how I am and my coaching style. So I’m just glad that he felt comfortable enough that he wanted to play for me.”
Jordan Hull, a wide receiver transfer from Lafayette, is one of 15 players that make up Hull’s first DelState rercuiting class. Wednesday was National Signing Day for college football.
Hull is happy that those 15 commitments are out of the 18 players that visited campus — with one of the remaining three still making up his mind.
The class includes four defensive backs, four wide receivers, three offensive linemen, two defensive linemen, a running back and a long snapper. There are four transfers and two in-state players: defensive Keishawn Mansfield (Cape Henlopen) and long snapper Carter Rasin (Red Lion Chrsitian).
Since Hull was only hired in late December, he said he relied heavily on returning assistant coach Jeff Braxton to tell him what holes needed to be filled.
Hull said he also made use of some personal connections to find a few players. One of the other transfers, running back Jaden Sutton, was a teammate of his son’s at Lafayette.
Another signee is the son of one of his new assistant coaches.
Sutton ran for 969 yards and seven touchdowns in four seasons with the Leopards while Hull had 29 catches for 355 yards and a TD.
But like with any other team, signing day is just the start of putting together a roster for next season. The roster will continue to evolve, especially after spring practice, which the Hornets are planning to start on March 21.
Considering he missed the early signing day in December, Hull is happy with how things turned out.
“I think we put a pretty good class together,” he said. “The biggest thing in this signing period was to get a base.”
