MILFORD — His 100th career victory came on Friday night and he earned an Outstanding Wrestler award on Saturday night.

So Chase Archangelo had a nice weekend.

The Smyrna High senior 145-pound wrestler was one of three Eagles to win their bracket at the Milford Invitational. Archangelo recorded a 6-0 decision in the championship round and was honored at the end of the meet with the Outstanding Wrestler award.

“I think it went pretty well,” Archangelo said. “I was able to get a great match in.”

Milford won three weight classes while Sussex Central had the most individual winners with four. The Golden Knights also topped the team standings to take home the team title.

The Golden Knights were paced by Rashad Stratton (126 pounds), Blake Chambers (160), Brandon Bautista (170) and John Morris (220). Morris had perhaps the most thrilling victory of the night with a one-point decision in overtime to rally from an early overtime deficit.

Bautista won his title bout on an injury default while Stratton and Chambers edged out decision.

“I’m pleased with how it went out there,” Stratton said. “I wrestled tough but wrestled smart. On top I wasn’t the best but on my feet I thought I was pretty good and I came out with a win.”

Smyrna’s Greg Baum, a defending state champion, won the 132-pound bracket with a 12-7 decision. Baum trailed in the first period 4-1 but was able to rally to take an advantage in the second period and held on.

“It was just score after score after score,” Baum said. “I just kept working. I didn’t stop. It gave me the lead. I expected a battle. I gave it my all.”

Tony Wuest was the other Smyrna wrestler to take home top spot.

The junior earned a 5-0 victory via decision in the 195-pound final.

“The Milford tournament is always a good tournament to see where everyone is at,” Wuest said. “You get to see what everyone has been doing over the summer and how big everyone got or what weight they’re at. It’s a good eye-opener and shows you what you need to work on. I definitely need to work on some things but I’m happy and I did what I needed to do.”

The hosts were led by Robbie Rosser (113), Bevensky Augustin (182) and Bryan Wynes (285). All of those victories were by decisions.

Rosser was the only wrestler in the field who was able to defend his title from last year’s meet.

“I think I wrestled a good match,” Rosser said. “I wanted to get the preseason rust off. This is a lot of fun to wrestle in front of your home crowd and it’s big to win in front of everybody.”

Middletown also had three individual winners — Will Carl (120), Dante Immediato (138) and Brian Schneider (152).

Salesianum’s Zach Spencer rounded out the list of champions with the 106-pound championship.
