Smyrna wrestling team pins Panthers in North opener

Smyrna High opened its Henlopen North schedule with a 57-12 victory over Polytech in wrestling Monday night.

It was also the first dual meet of the season for the Eagles, who went 6-2 a season ago.

The Panthers fell to 2-1 in the Henlopen North, 4-1 overall.

Milford 46, Sussex Central 20: The Buccaneers raised their record to 2-0 in the Henlopen North, 3-0 overall with the win on Monday night.

The Golden Knights are 0-2 in the North, 1-3 overall.

Caesar Rodney 58, St. Georges 24: Marlon Smith (132) registered a 16-second pin while teammate Josh Dyer (220) added a 24-second fall in the Riders’ nonconference win.

CR finished with nine pins, including four in under a minute.

Also winning by pin for the Riders were Cameron Cataldi (138), Cody Waski (145), Nathan Legg (160), DeVaughn Baker (170), Owen Dixon (182), Shamar Nelson (195) and Robert Meister (285).

Indian River 70, First State Military 12: The Indians collected nine pins in picking up the victory.

Winning by fall for IR were Steven Mayfield (113), Tyler McManus (120), James Esque (132), Evan Forjan (138), Jack Jestice (170), Caleb McCabe (182), Clayton Cifuentes Roblero (182), Austin Grise (220) and T.J. Burke (285).

Caden Thomas (152) and Ceth Linebarger (160) posted back-to-back pins for the Bulldogs.

Girls’ basketball

Delmarva Christian 43, Worcester Prep 34: Ainsley Bell netted 20 points, with three three-pointers, to pace the Royals (5-2).

Sierra Troyer added 10 points for Delmarva Christian, which led 16-4 after the first quarter.

Archmere 56, First State Military 3: The Auks downed the Bulldogs in a Diamond State Conference game.

College basketball

UD’s Battle honored by CAA: Delaware women’s basketball senior forward Ty Battle was named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week.

In an 86-84 overtime win at Charleston on Sunday, Battle posted her seventh double-double of the season after tying her career-best with 21 points while pulling down a career-high 22 rebounds. The 22 rebounds were the second most in program history.

The school record for rebounds in a game is 27.

On the season, Battle is averaging 13.5 points and 10.6 rebounds. She leads the conference in double-doubles.

Delaware next hosts Hofstra on Friday at 7 p.m.

College athletics

DSU seeking Hall nominations: Delaware State University is seeking nominations for its next Athletics Hall of Fame class.

Former Hornet student-athletes who graduated or completed their eligibility prior to 2017 after completing at least two years of participation in one or more sports are eligible for consideration. Hall of Fame nominations are also being accepted for former Delaware State coaches and administrators, as well as supporters of the university’s athletics program.

The 2022 DSU Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony is scheduled for this fall in Dover. Nominations will be accepted until March 18.
