It took a while for Smyrna High's boys' basketball program to make its first appearance in the DIAA state championship game.

Smyrna battled past Caravel, 61-53, in the state finals at the Carpenter Center to capture its first state crown in the sport.
The victory capped off a 23-2 season for the Eagles and made them the first Henlopen Conference team to win the state championship since 1997.
Photographer Marc Clery captured the moment for the Delaware State News.
