SMYRNA — A Smyrna police officer and his detainee were injured when a fleeing DUI suspect crashed into a patrol car Wednesday, spokesman Lt. Brian Donner said.

The suspect also sustained minor injuries, police added.

Authorities said the incident began at approximately 9:50 p.m., when another patrol officer observed a red pickup driving recklessly on U.S. 13 in the area of Cory Lane. According to Lt. Donner, the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver fled north on U.S. 13.

Police said the driver then sideswiped a vehicle in the area of U.S. 13 and Mill Street and continued north.

A second Smyrna officer was pulled over on the shoulder of U.S. 13 in the area of Mount Vernon Street, with an unrelated DUI suspect in the rear of the patrol vehicle.

The pickup truck, still traveling north, drifted off the road and struck the parked patrol unit, pushing it off the shoulder and into a yard, Lt. Bonner said.

The pickup then came to a rest in the median of U.S. 13. Driver Paul Reed, 62, of Smyrna, had to be extricated from the truck, authorities said.

The officer in the vehicle that was struck was entrapped and had to be removed with assistance from the Citizens’ Hose Co. of Smyrna, Lt. Donner said. His passenger was able to free himself.

Mr. Reed, the officer and the detainee were all transported to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.

Upon release from the hospital, police said Mr. Reed will be charged with fifth-offense DUI, disregarding a police officer's signal, possession of ammunition by a person prohibited, second-degree reckless endangering (three counts), second-degree vehicular assault and 28 other traffic offenses.
