SMYRNA — A 56-year-old Smyrna man is facing 13 charges after accidentally shooting himself while unloading a firearm on Nov. 14, police said in an arrest affidavit.

Theodore W. Norman suffered a leg wound after the gun discharged, according to Clayton Police, and was transported to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover and then Christiana Hospital in Newark for medical treatment.

As police located the involved firearm in Mr. Norman’s room, according to the affidavit, several other weapons were seen in the hallway and in his bedroom.

A computer check found that Mr. Norman was convicted of a felony theft charge in New Castle County in 2010 and thus prohibited from possessing any firearms.

A search warrant resulted and 10 firearms and several thousand rounds of ammunition were confiscated, Clayton Police said. A glass smoking bowl with marijuana inside and a fireworks item were also allegedly detected, police said.

A semi-automatic pistol, six rifles and three shotguns were found, according to authorities.

Charges included 11 counts of felony possession of a firearm/ammunition by person prohibited, sale or possession of fireworks and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The charges were entered into the Kent County Court of Common Pleas in Dover last Friday.
