DOVER — Downstate teams took two of the three No. 1 seeds when the DIAA football state tournaments were announced on Sunday.

Smyrna High has the top seed in Class 3A with Laurel holding the top spot in Class 1A according to the tourney point system.

Nine downstate teams made the fields for the three tournaments, which get underway next weekend. The Class 1A and 3A tourneys, because they include fewer teams, will have a two-week break between the semifinals and finals.

All three state championsip games will be played on Dec. 10 at Delaware Stadium in Newark.

In games involving downstate squads in Class 3A, No. 1 Smyrna (9-1) hosts No. 8 Cape Henlopen (4-6) on Friday while No. 3 Sussex Central (8-2) hosts Dover (6-4) on No. 6 Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.

Both games are rematches from the regular season. Smyrna just beat Cape Henopen, 40-13, this past Friday while Sussex Central beat Dover, 21-0, on Oct. 14.

In Class 2A, No. 6 Lake Forest (8-2) hosts No. 11 Delaware Military (5-5) on Friday at 7 p.m. while No. 10 Delmar (4-6) goes to No. 7 Red Lion Christian (7-3) on Saturday at 7 p.m.

In Class 3A, No. 1 Laurel (10-0) hosts No. 8 St. Andrews (4-6) on Friday, No. 7 Indian River (5-5) travels to No. 2 St. Elizabeth (9-1) on Friday while, on Saturday, No. 6 Seaford (7-3) plays at No. 3 Wilmington Charter (8-1) at noon.
