SMYRNA — Senior night turned into a party for the Smyrna High football team.

The Eagles honored their seniors then put up 48 first-half points on their way to a 48-7 victory over Appoquinimink Friday night in a 3A classification matchup. It was the sixth victory in a row for Smyrna who improved to 7-2 overall while the Jaguars dropped to 5-4.

Junior quarterback Cameron Edge threw for four touchdowns in the first half while senior running back Wayne Knight and senior wide receiver Devin DeMoe each contributed a pair of touchdowns. Smyrna’s offensive starters were given the rest of the night off thanks to a 48-0 halftime advantage as the second half was played with a running clock.

“We executed at the level offensively that we’ve been striving to get to for the last eight weeks,” said Smyrna coach Mike Judy. “It was a big night and felt good. It was probably the best first half of football that we played all year.”

DeMoe put an exclamation point on the end of the first half, snagging a 35-yard Hail Mary as time expired. He came down with the ball despite being covered by several Jaguar defenders which capped off a 97-yard Smyrna drive in the final 28 seconds of the second quarter.

“That’s our best jump ball guy,” Edge said. “He went up with two hands and came down with it. It didn’t surprise me, he does that a lot.”

Smyrna got things started with some big plays on special teams from sophomore defensive lineman Brandon West who blocked two punts on Appoquinimink’s first two possessions.

The first blocked punt set up a 7-yard touchdown by Knight. The second led to a one-play drive and a 16-yard touchdown from Edge to DeMoe.

“Those were not punt block scenarios or punt block rushes, it was just a kid making a good play,” “I think we were real stout defensively.”

West added a pair of sacks, senior linebacker Nate Lesniczak also recorded two sacks and senior defensive back Isaac Stewart provided an interception to pace the Smyrna defense.

Edge finished 8-of-14 passing for 214. Knight earned 102 yards on eight carries. Both players only played in the first half.

Junior wide receiver Yamir Knight added an 82-yard touchdown reception from Edge while Denim Smith caught an 18-yard touchdown. Wayne Knight also scored a rushing touchdown from a yard out to round out the Smyrna scoring.

The Eagles were perfect on all six of their two-point conversion attempts.

While Edge still has another year left, he said it was important for him to honor his seniors with a victory.

“It was emotional seeing all these guys because we’ve been together since kindergarten,” Edge said. “I think we did a good job to send them out the right way.”
