SMYRNA — The Smyrna High football team continued its winning ways to end the regular season, setting the Eagles up for a possible top overall seed in the DIAA Class 3A state tournament when brackets are announced Sunday.

Nolan Fretz caught a pair of touchdowns from Brian Wright to lead the Eagles to a 40-13 victory over Cape Henlopen High on Friday night. It was the eighth consecutive win for the Eagles who end the regular season at 9-1 overall and finished 4-0 in Class 3A, District II.

The Vikings led 7-0 before Fretz snagged a nine-yard pass from Wright for a touchdown with 5:25 left in the first quarter. Yamir Knight scored one the two-point conversion to give Smyrna a lead it would not relinquish.

Knight added a 44-yard rushing touchdown of his own in the second quarter and Fretz caught another touchdown, this time from 13 yards. Stephan Driver added a 55-yard interception return for a score in the first half as the Eagles were up 32-7 at halftime.

Markell Hollman scored on an eight yard rush in the third quarter to round out the Smyrna scoring.

Cape Henlopen was led by a 21-yard rushing touchdown from Maurki James in the first quarter and a three-yard rushing touchdown from Charles Fritchman in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings have lost four in a row to drop to 4-6 overall but still have a shot at making the eight-team field for the Class 3A tournament.
