Sipple: Bypasses help with traffic, but reckless drivers cause other issues

Posted

When I enter the Del. 1 bypass, I say to my wife, “Hold on. We’re going on the Route 1 racetrack.” The bypass has definitely done its job by bypassing all the traffic lights in each town. But the section from New Castle to Dover has turned into a racetrack.

With the speed limit in most areas 60 mph, you know that means most people are going at least 70. But cars are flying by you doing 80-plus. Even this would not be a problem if people were just driving smart. If you choose not to go fast, then stay in the right lane. Let the speeders go by. The problem is with people traveling in the left lane doing the speed limit or under. This interrupts the flow of traffic, with brake lights coming on, so everyone starts braking. The speeders start weaving in and out, creating a dangerous situation. I would like to see some left-lane violations in addition to the speeding ones.

Bottom line is, the bypasses have made it easier to go through our state. I just don’t want it to be a white-knuckle experience.
