DOVER — The Dover area’s latest shooting came early Thursday morning when a 33-year-old woman was hit by a bullet in the leg, police said.

Since Feb. 28, 17 persons have been killed or wounded in 13 gunfire incidents within and just outside Dover’s city limits. From March 1 to Thursday, Dover Police said they received 59 shots fired reports within the city, the majority of which proved unfounded or in which no evidence was located.

The most recent incident unfolded around 12:25 a.m. as Dover Police officers were called to the unit block of South Governors Avenue for a shots fired report. A victim was found with a single gunshot wound to the leg and transported by EMS to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital in Dover where she was later listed in stable condition.

Police said the victim was found in front of an area residence when shot. It was not disclosed whether she was alone or with others when located.

Authorities believed only one gunshot was fired and it was unknown if the incident was a targeted or random act.

When announcing the incident later Thursday morning, Dover Police spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said no suspect information was currently available from the victim or potential witnesses “at this time.”

Investigating police asked anyone with information to contact the Dover PD at 736-7130. Callers may remain anonymous. Tips can also be submitted to law enforcement through tip lines maintained by Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at www.tipsubmit.com or through the Dover PD MyPD Mobile App.

City and Delaware State Police reported four Dover area fatal shootings on June 27, June 1, May 3, and Feb. 28. Other shootings with injuries occurred on Thursday, Wednesday, May 24, May 19, May 17, April 18 (two), April 12 and March 29.

•Early Wednesday morning, Delaware State Police investigated a shooting just outside city limits where an 80-year-old man was shot while sleeping in his Alder Park Apartments residence at 51 Webbs Lane. Police said a bullet entered through a window and the man was wounded in a lower extremity. He was treated for a non-life threatening injury at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital.

Police said the chance of a stray bullet entering the apartment had not been discounted and all possibilities are being investigated.

State Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective D. Bloomquist at Troop 3 at 698-8426.

Information may also be provided by calling Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333, online at www.delaware.crimestoppersweb.com or by sending an anonymous tip by text to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword “DSP.”
