Senators edge DMA on Hite's last-second three-pointer

Amir Hite’s three-pointer from the top of the key with just 18 seconds left gave Dover High a dramatic 57-56 victory over Delaware Military in non-conference’s boys’ basketball on Thursday night.

The Senators trailed by seven with a few minutes remaining before scoring the final eight points to pull out the victory. Dover (11-2) was coming off a two-point loss to Smyrna that snapped its eight-game winning streak on Tuesday night.

The Senators called a timeout with 16.1 seconds remaining after taking the lead. DMA got off three more shots, including an errant try right before the final buzzer, but none of them fell.

Hite finished with 23 points, including five three-pointers. Jaheim Harrell added 12 points for Dover.

The contest was tied, 27-27, at halftime before the Senators took a 47-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Sussex Tech 66, Caesar Rodney 56: The Ravens rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to pull out the Henlopen North win.

Sussex Tech limited the Riders to just two fourth-quarter points, out-scoring CR, 12-2, in the period. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Riders.

Woodbridge 72, Polytech 65: The Blue Raiders took an 11-point advantage into the fourth quarter before posting the win over the Panthers.

Woodbridge was coming off an 89-34 Henlopen South victory over Sussex Academy on Tuesday.

Delmar 45, Lake Forest 34: The Wildcats picked up a 45-34 win over the Spartans in a Henlopen South matchup.

Girls’ basketball

Smyrna 58, Howard 40: The Eagles built a 34-10 halftime lead before registering the non-conference road win.

The victory was the fourth in a row for Smyrna, which is now 8-4.

Cape Henlopen 66, Sussex Central 23: The Vikings opened the game on a 25-3 run before staying unbeaten in the Henlopen North.

Morgan Mahoney netted 18 points with Mehkia Applewhite scoring 12.
Blair Darmstadter led the Golden Knights with 10.

Laurel 44, Seaford 43: The Bulldogs held a 23-10 halftime advantage before holding off the Blue Jays for the South victory.

Seaford out-scored Laurel, 18-12, in the fourth quarter.

Early College 37, Odessa 29: The Hornets improved to 3-4 overall with the non-conference win.

Red Lion Christian 53, Sussex Academy 20: Red Lion used a 17-4 first-quarter run to take control before downing the Seahawks.

Caravel 67, Delmarva Christian 42: The Buccaneers jumped out to a 23-3 lead to start the game before topping the Royals on Wednesday night.

Delmarva Christian’s Sierra Troyer led all scorers with 19 points while Evelyn Jensen followed with 11.

College basketball

WOMEN, Delaware 78, UNCW 69: The Blue Hens (5-1 CAA, 11-5 overall) picked up the win on Wednesday night in the first of three games in five days.

Delaware led by as many as 26 points in the contest. Senior Jasmine Dickey finished with 23 points to move into fifth place in the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,562 career points.

Tyi Skinner followed with 20 points and seven assists while Ty Battle put together a 16-point and 13-rebound night for her 11th double-double of the season.

College lacrosse

Blue Hen men No. 2 in CAA poll: The Delaware men’s lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the CAA preseason poll, behind defending champion Drexel.

Blue Hens’ Mike Robinson and Owen Grant were named the league’s Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

Delaware also tied Drexel for a league-high five preseason all-conference selections. Tye Kurtz, Robinson, Cam Acchione, Grant, and Matt Kilkeary were all on the preseason all-CAA team.

Delaware, the 16th ranked team in the Inside Lacrosse and USA Lacrosse preseason polls, opens up the season on Feb. 5 by hosting NJIT at noon.
