Sean Saxton, triathlete, to ride 146 miles across Delaware

REHOBOTH BEACH — The Delaware Bicycle Route 1 Challenge returns Sunday, Sept. 26.

The event features a 146-mile solo challenge all throughout Delaware by triathlete and endurance junkie, Sean Saxton. In honor of Mr. Saxton’s aunt who he lost to colorectal cancer, his dedication to raising money for those impacted by cancer honors her life and legacy that she left behind. In 2020, he and his team raised almost $6K for Cancer Support Community Delaware and he set an unofficial fastest known time on the course. He hopes this will continue to inspire others to complete the ride and tie their efforts to a cause that is meaningful to them.

CSCDE is looking for captains throughout the 146-mile course to set up table(s), lawn parties, gather volunteers and raise funds for the cause. If you’re unable to attend but still want to be involved, residents can buy a $10 label in honor/in memory of someone impacted by cancer. Mr. Saxton will place the name on his bike during the 146-mile ride. Delawareans can also donate $5 to display a hand written message on the pace car to encourage him on his journey.

For more sponsorship opportunities or questions about the event, please contact Michelle Mallon at mmallon@cscde.org, or 995-2850.

All programs at CSCDE are offered at no cost to the participant, their families and caregivers. Cancer Support Community Delaware served a record number of participants because of the pandemic in 2020. More than 6,000 people were served and there were 20,000 visits provided. The numbers are soaring again in 2021.

“CSCDE has spent the past 25 years making our mission our tradition, by striving to ensure that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community. Cancer continues to be a significant problem in Delaware and particularly in Sussex County. We provide emotional support services and educational programs that promote a better quality of life to our friends, family and neighbors who are living with cancer,” Nicole Topkis Pickles, executive director of CSCDE, said in a prepared statement.

The Cancer Support Community is part of a national nonprofit organization that provides support, education and hope to people with cancer and their loved ones. Through participation in professionally led support groups, educational workshops and mind/body classes, people affected by cancer learn vital skills that enable them to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of disease.  At the CSCDE, all programs are free of charge.

The event is currently scheduled to occur as planned with adherence to the social distancing mandates. Any changes, due to social distancing protocol, will be communicated via email or through the CSCDE website.
