SEAFORD — Tazieh Clemmons, 18, of Seaford, was arrested on Wednesday for multiple criminal and traffic charges after he fled from troopers and was found in possession of drugs, Delaware State Police said.

At 2:02 p.m., troopers were conducting proactive patrol on Old Furnace Road, authorities said, when they observed the driver of a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee not wearing his seat belt. A traffic stop was initiated on the Jeep, but the driver, later identified as Mr. Clemmons, failed to stop, police said.

When Mr. Clemmons turned onto King Road, he stopped the vehicle and fled on foot. Troopers and a DSP K-9 gave chase, and Mr. Clemmons was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. Police said he was found with 0.546 grams of heroin and $2,587 in suspected drug proceeds.

At the same time, police said, another trooper at the scene contacted front-seat passenger Julius Cheers, 18, of Salisbury, Maryland. Mr. Cheers threw his cellphone and drug paraphernalia to the ground as he was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody without incident, police said.

A strong odor of marijuana was detected emitting from inside the Jeep Cherokee, and a search of the vehicle was conducted. Located inside were $146 in suspected drug proceeds and approximately 74.46 grams of marijuana, police said.

Mr. Clemmons was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries received during the apprehension. He was treated, released and transported to DSP Troop 4.

Mr. Clemmons was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance (two counts), disregarding a police officer signal, resisting arrest, possession of drug paraphernalia (two counts) and multiple traffic violations. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace Court 2 and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $7,005 secured bond.

Mr. Cheers was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia (two counts). He was arraigned in JP Court 2 and released on a $3,000 unsecured bond.
