SDARJ town hall to mark local Black history

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice will celebrate Black History Month with an online program, “Black History in Delaware/Sussex County,” on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Focusing on state and local people and events, the town hall will include presentations on the education system, the role of religion and Black social life.

Historian Syl Woolford, commissioner of the Delaware Heritage Commission, will review the history of schools and development of education in Delaware and Sussex County. The Rev. George Edwards Sr., pastor at Friendship Baptist Church, Lewes, will address the role of religion in the local Black community. Trina Brown-Hicks of the Lewes African American Heritage Commission will give an overview of the history of Black social life, as well as provide an update on the commission.

The meeting will also feature clips from Sussex County residents who are making history on a national level.
