DOVER — Delaware State put together the best offensive quarter in school history, leading to an absolute rout on Saturday.
The Hornets scored a school-record 42 points in the second quarter in a 56-6 victory over an over-matched Virginia University of Lynchburg on Saturday. They improved to 3-3 ahead of an upcoming bye week before beginning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play the following week.
The 42 points beat Delaware State’s previous record for points in a quarter, which was 30 against Arkansas Pine-Bluff in 1988.
VUL, who has not won a game since 2018, are members of the National Christian College Athletic Association. The Dragons dropped to 0-6 overall.
Delaware State played mostly backups in the second half after its 42-0 lead.
“This gave us a chance to play a majority of our team to see where we are as a whole,” said DSU coach Rod Milstead. “We gave those guys a taste of what Delaware State football is all about. It was a great opportunity to get a win, but more importantly to evaluate and rest some guys before a bye week.”
Two running backs, Sy’Veon Wilkerson and Michael Chris-Ike, each recorded 100-yard games. It was the first time Delaware State had two rushers with more than 100 yards in a game since 2018 — Chris-Ike and Brycen Alleyne against North Carolina Central.
Both Wilkerson and Chris-Ike rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Jared Lewis threw for two touchdowns as well, one to Trey Gross and another to Bizzett Woodley. Lewis added a rushing touchdown as well.
“We all contributed at every position,” Lewis said “It was really a team win. I like that.”
Wade Inge also scored a rushing touchdown for the Hornets who out-gained VUL 460-172.
Delaware State did not score on two first quarter possessions, but had a touchdown on each of its six second quarter possessions.
Jawain Granger paced the defense with four solo tackles, an interception, two sacks and a forced fumble.
