COACHES: Delaware — Ryan Carty (1-0, 1st season); Delaware State — Rod Milstead (13-27, 5th season).

NATIONAL RANKING: Delaware is No. 10 in STATS FCS poll.

LAST WEEK: Delaware beat Navy, 14-7; Delaware State beat Lincoln, 34-0.

SERIES: Delaware leads, 10-0.

LAST MEETING: Delaware won, 34-14, on April 10, 2021.

QUOTES OF THE WEEK: •UD coach Ryan Carty on the importance of beating Navy: “I’m not going to say it wasn’t a big one because it was the opener. It set the tone for who we want to be. I think it validated some of the things that internally we have thought of as strengths. ... I think that’s important. Because when you talk about belief, at some point you need some proof. I think that helped there. Other than that, it’s 1-0. If you don’t go 2-0, people forget about that first one pretty quick.”

•DSU coach Rod Milstead on last week’s performance against Lincoln: “I wasn’t happy with how we performed in the first half. I wanted to see more consistency from the offense. I think the second half, we started to pick it up, we got some breaks and short fields, and we definitely took care of that opportunity. But next week, we’ve got to be more consistent on offense.”

KEYS TO THE GAME: Both teams’ veteran defenses were impressive in season-opening victories last week against different levels of opponent. While Delaware did a great job against the run, its pass defense was largely untested by the Mids. Delaware State, on the other hand, blanked a Lincoln offense that has struggled for a few years. Both will face different challenges on Saturday. ... It will be interesting to see how DelState deals with the unexpected loss of Esaias Guthrie. The standout defensive back announced on Thursday that he’s entering the NCAA Transfer Portal. The Hornets will need someone to step up in his place. ... After a big win like the Blue Hens had against Navy, a letdown is always possible. That’s especially true given how physical the contest was. Given that they’ve never beaten Delaware, the Hornets are the underdogs and that should give DSU plenty of energy. ... Delaware is averaging 36.6 points per game in the all-time series while Delaware State is scoring only 10.5. The Hornets have scored more than two touchdowns only once against the Hens. If DSU is going to have a chance at the upset, it’s probably going to need to come up with more points. In the last meeting, the Hornets scored a pair of TDs off of two blocked punts.

NOTES: Delaware QB Nolan Henderson has thrown 94 straight passes without an interception, the second-longest streak of his career. ... The last time Ryan Carty coached a game in Delaware Stadium was in 2015 and he was the offensive coordinator at New Hampshire. ... Devin Curry caught five of the seven passes that the Hornets completed last week against Lincoln. He also threw one of the other completions. ... Eight different DSU player had a carry for DSU in the contest. ... The Hornets had 10 tackles for loss against Lincoln. ... Neither team had a touchback in their combined nine kickoffs last week. That could mean there will be some returns in Saturday’s game ... Delaware plays its CAA opener next Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Rhode Island while Delaware State is back home for a 2 p.m. contest against Virginia University of Lynchburg.
