DOVER - Samuel M.D. Marshall, Jr., formerly of Milford, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013. Mr. Marshall was born in Milford on Aug. 13, 1925, son of the late Dr. S.M.D. and Ruth Heisler Marshall. He attended the Milford School, The Tome School, and graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific and in the Korean War with the U.S. Marines. After his military service was completed, Mr. Marshall attended and graduated from the University of Delaware. He worked for General Motors, then the Milford Trust Company, and the Bank of Delaware from where he retired as their Chief Executive Officer in 1985. Mr. Marshall was a long time member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Milford, where he served on the Vestry. He was past president of the By-County United Way; a member and past president of the Milford Rotary Club; past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Milford Memorial Hospital; founding member and first president of Downtown Milford, Inc.; a member of the Milford Historical Society; and the first Chairman of the City of Milford Commission of Landmarks and Museums. For several years, Mr. Marshall taught "Victorian Architecture of Kent and Sussex Counties" for the University of Delaware Elderhostel program and for the University of Delaware Southern Academy of Lifelong Learning. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Eva Cooke Marshall; a daughter and son-in-law, Drs. Catharine M. and Paul G. Lemieux of Lake Bluff, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Donnell M. and Lisa S. Marshall of Milford; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nephews, Alan M. and John Horton, both of Florida. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 N. Church St, Milford. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to the Milford Museum, 121 S. Walnut St, Milford, DE, 19963 or to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 191, Milford.
