Ruth Benton King

LAUREL - Ruth Benton King, age 87, of Laurel, went to be with the Lord on March 25, 2012, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. Ruth was born in Buffalo, N.Y., a daughter of the late Ernest L. and Ruth Markem Benton. Mrs. King was a loving homemaker and devoted women of the Church. She was a Sunday School Teacher for over 60 years at Kings United Methodist Church. While at the church she was known for her knowledge of the Bible and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She especially enjoyed sharing her knowledge with the younger members of the church and was a mentor to many at Laurel Elementary Schools. She was also a member of the Martha Rebekka Lodge of Laurel. Ruth is survived by her son, Thomas King and wife Julie of Laurel; her two daughters, Kathy Smardon and husband Jeff of Jericho, Vt., and Connie Mears and husband Arthur Lee of Georgetown; a brother, Duane Benton of Hockessin; and sisters, Ethel Spaulding of Hamburg, N.Y., Bessie Babcock of DePue, N.Y., and Evelyn Rogers of E. Aurora, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Anna Belle King; her grandchildren, Clint Smardon, Jeremy and Liz Smardon, Lee and Erika Mears, Stacie and Garon Warner; seven great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews also survive her. Mrs. King is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur T. King, whom passed in 1997; and a brother, Lloyd Benton. A Funeral Service will be held at the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel, on Friday, March 30, at 2 p.m., where a viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Mark Perry and Rev. Dr. Everett Isaacs will officiate. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery Laurel.
