DOVER - A 45-year-old Delaware man died Thursday after the tractor trailer he was driving left Del. 1 and struck several trees after traveling down a grass embankment, authorities said.

Antonio Dejesus, who Delaware State Police said was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. He resided in Bear.

According to spokesperson Sgt. India Sturgis, the truck was pulling a loaded flatbed cargo trailer when it left the roadway for unknown reasons at approximately 8:09 a.m.

Del. 1 southbound south of exit 104 was closed for approximately five hours as the roadway was cleared and the crash was investigated.

At 2:15 p.m., Delaware Department of Transportation spokesperson C.R. McLeod said “We expect cleanup to continue into the evening hours as there was also a small fuel leak and some soil will need be removed. “

According to Mr. McLeod said multiple Department of Transportation trucks and employees were involved in maintaining the Del. 1 southbound closure and directing traffic off exit 104.

“We expect cleanup to continue into the evening hours as there was also a small fuel leak and some soil will need be removed,” he said.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues investigating this incident. Troopers asked anyone who witnessed the collision to contact Master Cpl. Joseph Lane by calling 302-698-8457. Information may also be provided by contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or online at delaware.crimestoppersweb.com.
