The Wesley College baseball team took one of the two games on Sunday from St. Joseph’s (Brooklyn) Bears in a non-conference doubleheader.

The Wolverines dropped the opener of the doubleheader 5-4 to the Bears before bouncing back with a 7-6 victory in the second game.

Chris Seibert gave Wesley the victory in the second game with a walkoff double.

The walk-off win in the second game of the doubleheader was the Wolverines (6-2 overall) third comeback win of the young season after trailing in the seventh inning or later.

Trey Mears, Cody Dmiterchik and Seibert each had two-hit performances in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

Cody Simet earned his second win of the season. Simet pitched a complete game with three strikeouts while no allowing a walk.

Sam Meck struck out 10 batters and only walked one in seven innings of work in the first game.

Rider 4, Delaware 3: The Blue Hens dropped their home opener, falling to Rider at Bob Hannah Stadium in the opening day of the Bob Hannah Invitational.

Entering the final inning trailing by a run, the Blue Hens (2-6) received a lead off walk from Calvin Scott and a clutch pinch-hit single by freshman Andrew Reich to put runners on first and second with one out.

After Kevin Mohollen bunted the runners to second and third, senior catcher Nick Tierno popped up to the left fielder.

The Broncs (3-4) then intentionally walked Jordan Glover to load the bases for senior designated hitter Doug Trimble, who smoked a line drive that Rider third baseman Christian Estevez was able to snare for the final out of the ballgame.

On the mound, the Blue Hens received another great start from ace Brandon Walter. Walter pitched seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just one earned run recording seven strikeouts in the process.

Offensively, the Blue Hens received a two-RBI triple from Scott in the second inning, and an RBI single from Trimble in the fifth.

The Blue Hens return to the diamond tomorrow morning when they will place Rider again (11:00 a.m.) before closing the day with a game against Delaware State (2:30 p.m.).

Junior Captain Nick Spadafino is projected to face off with Harrison McClure in the opener today, while lefty Kevin Milley will oppose Garrett Lawson in the finale of the Bob Hannah Invitational.

Rider 4, Delaware State 2: The score was 2-2 when Rider’s Lee Lipinski singled in the go-ahead run off Hornet reliever Terry Godfrey with one out in the eighth. The Broncs scored their fourth run on a Hornet error with two outs in the inning.

Lane DeLeon started for DSU. He surrendered a run on two hits while striking out four in four innings.

Catcher Evan Regez had two of the Hornets’ six hits. Austin Bentley doubled with one out in the seventh for DSU’s lone extra base hit of the game.

Darnel Maisonet and Kwestin Smith drove in both runs for DelState.

Women’s lacrosse

Wesley 16, Notre Dame (Md.) 15: In a game contested on Saturday, Wesley won its third consecutive game to improve to 3-0.

The back-and-forth game went down to the wire with Wesley playing down for the majority of the game. Notre Dame took the 15-14 lead late in the second half with 2:51 left in regulation. Wesley tied the game at 15 with 2:21 when Paige Brehm scored after she controlled the draw. A little under a minute later,

Fallon Fore put away the eventual game-winning goal with 1:27 remaining in the game.

Fore, Brehm and Ashley Luna each tallied four goals for the Wolverines. Fore also registered four draw controls, three assists, and two ground balls. Brehm corralled seven draws, caused four turnovers and picked up three ground balls while Luna scooped five ground balls.

Kathleen Martin and Brianna Bacon recorded two goals apiece in the win. Bacon added two caused turnovers and an assist. Allison Perugini and Maddison Cypher each notched an assist

Shelby Schirmer saved nine Gator shots in the win.

The Wolverines are now tied for the best start in program history with their third consecutive victory. The 2007 Wolverines also started their season 3-0.
