There are no shortage of contenders after the first round of the Delaware Open.

A total of 13 players are within two shots of the lead following the opening 18 holes of the 51st annual golf tournament on Monday afternoon.

The tourney concludes today with two rounds at Deerfield Golf Course, outside Newark.

Wild Quail’s Jay Whitby is one of four players tied for the lead after shooting a two-under par 68. Peter Barron (Baywood Greens), Mike Tobiason (Deerfield) and Jesse Betts (Patriots Glen) also carded 68s.

Forty-five players made the cut for the final two rounds at 75 or lower. Dover High grad Chris Wilser and Wild Quail’s Jeff Allen are tied for eighth place with 70s.

The 29-year-old Whitby won the Delaware Amateur this summer. He won the Delaware Open in 2013.

On Monday, Whitby finished with five biries, all on the back nine, against three bogeys in his round.

Former Wild Quail member Chris Hickman was the last player to win both the Open and Amateur in the same year, doing so in 2014.

College basketball

UD women pick up Clemson transfer: The Delaware women’s basketball team has added Clemson transfer Gadson Lefft to its roster.

A 6-foot forward/guard from Lake Wylie, S.C., Lefft will jave three seasons remaining when she becomes be eligible for the the 2017-18 campaign.

“Gadson is a young lady who can play multiple positions,” said coach Tina Martin, who is in her 21st season at the helm of the Blue Hens. “She shoots the ball well from the outside and can drive the ball to the basket. Additionally, she can rebound at both ends of the floor. We are very excited about Gadson’s future in a Delaware uniform.”

As a freshman last season, Lefft averaged 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 points in 21 games for the Tigers.

Lefft played two seasons at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, S.C. where she scored over 1,000 points and grabbed 750 rebounds as a two-time All-State honoree. The SCISA AAA Player of the Year, Lefft guided the Highlanders to the program’s first-ever SCISA State title during her senior season in 2013-14.

Following graduation from Heathwood in 2014, Lefft spent a year at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., where she averaged 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game before enrolling at Clemson.
