The Wesley College women’s soccer team trailed for over 45 minutes of regulation but notched a late goal to force overtime against Neumann on Tuesday night.

Unfortunately for the Wolverines, the comeback fell short as the Knights posted a 2-1 overtime victory.

Aleya Cummings (Caesar Rodney High) scored her fifth goal in two games to even the score for the Wolverines while Sam Brannigan made four saves in the loss.

Wesley (1-2) played Neumann evenly throughout with the Wolverines putting seven shots on goal to the Knights’ six.

In the 62nd minute of play, Cummings broke through for Wesley. The freshman forward outsprinted a defender to get into a threatening position, drew the keeper out before beating her and tapped the ball into an empty net for the tying goal.

Wesley nearly broke the tie in the 81st minute when Sammy Williams had a crack on net, but it was turned away by the Neumann goalkeeper to leave the score tied. Time ran out in the regulation period, forcing the two teams into extra time.

UD men ranked No. 22: A 3-0 start to the season has brought attention to the Delaware men’s soccer team as the Blue Hens are ranked No. 22 in this week’s NSCAA Division I Coaches Poll.

The Hens garnered 118 total points and are one of 11 teams in the Top 25 with an unblemished record.

“I am happy for our players in that their hard work thus far has paid off with a place amongst the best teams in the nation,” said UD coach Ian Hennessy. “I hope it can inspire them to push harder to keep climbing and use it as incentive for tomorrow night’s game (against Iona).”

Delaware received votes in last week’s poll, but have not appeared in the Top 25 since the 2014 campaign when the Hens were ranked as high as No. 11. UD is also ranked No. 3 in the NSCAA Midwest Regional Poll.

Wesley’s Springsteen wins award: After leading the Wesley College men’s soccer team to an undefeated opening week, freshman goalkeeper Kyle Springsteen was named Capital Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Springsteen won the award after totaling nine saves and allowing just two goals in a 1-0-2 week for the Wolverines.

Blue Hens crack Top 10: Following an historic upset over then-No. 5 Virginia this past weekend, Delaware jumped to No. 10 in the most recent Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.

The Blue Hens, who were ranked No. 14 in the preseason poll, received 401 points to be slated 10th. Delaware (3-1) previously had not been in the Top 10 since 1998, when the Hens went as high as No. 6 in the country.

Delaware next plays at Temple on Friday at 4 p.m. before traveling to No. 16 Princeton for a 1 p.m. start Sunday.

Pair of UD players honored: Following career weekends, Emmeline Oltmans and Alexis Gazzio earned Colonial Athletic Association Player and Rookie of the Week awards, respectively.

Oltmans notched a career-high 11 saves Sunday afternoon as No. 14 Delaware upset No. 5 Virginia, 2-0, to be named the CAA Player of the Week. She also posted her fifth career shutout while facing 19 Cavaliers shots.

Oltmans’ previous career-best came with eight saves in Delaware’s loss at No. 5 Duke last season.

Gazzio registered her first career goal in Friday’s overtime loss at No. 20 Old Dominion and followed with an insurance goal in Sunday’s win. The freshman is currently tied for second on the team with four points on two goals.

WNBA

Delle Donne picks up award: Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky was named the WNBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Week.

Delaware’s Delle Donne earned Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and the 12th time in her four-year career. The 2015 WNBA Most Valuable Player led the Sky to a 4-0 week — which covered the first 10 days after the Olympic break — as Chicago improved to 15-13 overall and moved into second place in the Eastern Conference.

Delle Donne leads the WNBA in scoring for the season at 22.1 ppg. She paced all WNBA players in scoring (27.3 ppg) and ranked fourth among East players in rebounding (7.3 rpg) last week.
