The Wesley College men’s lacrosse team picked up a hard-fought 9-8, double-overtime victory over Rosemont on Wednesday for its first win of the season.

Staring at 5-1 halftime deficit, Wesley (1-1) rifled off a four unanswered goals to tie the game at 5-5 at the end of the third quarter.

Then, after falling behind by three goals, Zach Farnell tied the game at 8-8 with 1:17 left in regulation.

After a scoreless first overtime, Wesley wasted no time in the second OT. Nate Gemmato won the opening faceoff, then passed it to Joe Fingles who forwarded the ball on to Leo Kelly for the game-winning tally.

Farnell notched a hat trick for the Wolverines while Kelly found the net twice in the win. Gemmato and Adam Tewey dished out two assists apiece while Gemmato added a goal.

The Wolverines caused 12 Raven turnovers and scooped up 25 ground balls. Goalie James Cella stopped five shots to earn his first collegiate victory in net.

College baseball

George Washington 9, Delaware State 6: The Hornets trailed 7-2 before pulling to within a run in the eighth inning only to fall short.

Austin Bentley drove in three runs, two on his first homer of the season, to lead DSU (1-3), which has dropped its last three games.

Delaware State got back into the game with three runs in the seventh.

The Hornets had the bases loaded with one out when Bentley was hit by a pitch to bring in a run on his third RBI of the game. DSU scored its second run of the inning on a wild pitch before Jared Gillis (Smyrna) singled in a seventh-inning run to trim George Washington’s lead to 7-5.

Delaware State had a chance for more in the inning, but left the bases loaded.

The Hornets, though, pulled to within 7-6 on a run-scoring groundout by Kwestin Smith in the top of the eighth. But the Colonials tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.

Swimming

Cape has strong start in state meet: Cape Henlopen High sent swimmers to the finals of seven events in Wednesday’s preliminary round of the DIAA girls’ swimming state meet.

The finals are slated for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the University of Delaware’s Carpenter Sports Building pool.

The Henlopen Conference champion Vikings posted the top time in a pair of relays. Seniors Molly Weeks, Sarah Hyde, Amelia Nigh-Johnson and Sarah Rambo qualified first in both the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.17) and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.64).

Weeks also took second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.00) and fourth in the 100-yard butterfly (58.59), Hyde qualified third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.97) and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.73) while Rambo was fourth in the 100-yard freestyle (55.11).

Sussex Tech put swimmers in the finals in three events. The Ravens’ Hannah Venables qualified sixth in the 50-yard freestyle (25.30), the relay team of Kelsey Fowler, Hannah Venables, Amy Venables and Megan Perdue took eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:54.72) and Peredue, the Venables and Bridget Johnson were eighth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:46.39).

The only other downstater to reach the finals was Caesar Rodney’s AnaLucia Villabona, who qualified fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.34).

Boys’ basketball

St. Mark’s 63, Polytech 41: The Panthers jumped out to a four-point, first-quarter lead but the Spartans went on a 22-4 run in the second quarter to take control.

Joey Haas netted 16 points, including five three-pointers, while Carter Chasanov added 13 points for Polytech in its season finale.

Laurel 76, Salisbury Christian 32: The Bulldogs built a 40-17 halftime advantage before closing the regular season with a victory.

Sussex Central 50, Delmarva Christian 36: The Golden Knights outscored the Royals, 26-13, in the second half to pull away to the win.

Ethan Lambert netted 12 points for Central, which sank six three-pointers in the contest.

Joshua Vonhof scored 13 points to pace Delmarva Christian.

Girls’ basketball

Caravel 62, St. Thomas More 31: Aniah Patterson, with 14 points, was the only player to finish in double figures for the Ravens.

The Buccaneers led by 38 points after three quarters.

Laurel 59, Salisbury Christian 24: The Bulldogs picked up a victory in their regular-season finale.

The South champion Bulldogs will face North champion Caesar Rodney in the Henlopen Conference championship game on Friday at Cape Henlopen at 6 p.m.
