Roundup: St. Thomas More girls fall to Concord at MLK Showcase
The St. Thomas More girls’ basketball team was looking to avenge last year’s state tournament loss to Concord High, but was hurt by a strong second half perfomrance by the Raiders.
The Ravens fell to Concord, 56-41 in the Howard Wildcats MLK Showcase Monday afternoon, hosted by Howard High.
Concord pulled away with a 16-8 fourth quarter. The Raiders were paced by Zhan’e Snow’s game-high 20 points.
Kaylah Barnes, a freshman, ended the contest as St. Thomas More’s leading scorer with 12 points. Barnes drained three three-pointers on the afternoon.
DahNaija Barnes followed with 11 points.
The loss snapped a seven-game win streak for St. Thomas More. The Ravens dropped to 8-2 on the season.
Boys’ basketball
Dover 69, American History, N.J. 54: The Senators earned a victory in the Concord Classic on Monday, hosted by Concord High.
Concord 42, Lake Forest 41: The Spartans were on top at halftime but lost to Concord by a point after being outscored 14-2 in the third quarter.
Cam Lewis paced Lake Forest with 13 points. Kobe Mumford also finished in double figures with 11 points.
Women’s basketball
Norfolk State 82, Delaware State 74: Junior forward Kayla Roberts scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while senior forward Khalilah Ali added 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Norfolk State women’s basketball team over Delaware State.
Ali set a career high in scoring for the second straight game for the Spartans (9-7, 4-0 MEAC), who matched their best-ever MEAC start Monday.
Their only other time starting 4-0 came in their MEAC championship season of 2001-02. With its fourth MEAC win, NSU also surpassed last season’s total of three.
Delaware State shot 42.4 percent (28-66) from the floor, including 50 percent (8-of-16) from downtown, while Norfolk State shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) from the floor, including 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from behind the arc.
Norfolk State outrebounded Delaware State 49-44 and scored 22 points off 16 DSU turnovers.
Najai Pollard led the way for Delaware State with 21 points and 18 rebounds. Mikah Aldridge added 21 points, while Lorna Caesar was the third Hornet in double figures with 10 points.
The Hornets remained winless in MEAC play and fell to 0-4. They are 1-15 overall.
