Skylar Curley netted five straight points in the final two minutes to give Smyrna High the lead for good as the Eagles went on to a 53-46 victory over Dover in Henlopen North girls’ basketball on Tuesday night.
The Senators tied the score at 44-44 on a pair of free throws from Heaven Robinson with 2:12 remaining.
But Curley answered by sinking one of two foul shots and then got the ball inside for back-to-back baskets that gave Smyrna a 49-44 advantage with 1:07 remaining. Baskets by Deleon Foster and Glennyce James then sealed the outcome.
The Eagles out-scored the Senators by 18 after trailing 20-9 in the first quarter. Dover beat Smyrna by the exact same final score on Jan. 11.
Lake Forest 47, Seaford 30: The Spartans took a 40-16 lead after three quarters en route to the Henlopen South victory.
Senior Gabrielle Almonte netted a game-high 24 points, sinking 11 of Lake Forest’s 21 field goals. The win was the Spartans’ second over the Blue Jays this season.
Amira Tingle scored 18 points for Seaford.
Cape Henlopen 65, Sussex Tech 31: The Vikings built a 56-21 lead going into the fourth quarter as they won their 38th straight Henlopen North contest.
Morgan Mahoney (17 points, eight rebounds), Julia Saleur (11 points, four assists) and Mehkia Applewhite (10 points, nine rebounds, three assists) paced Cape Henlopen.
Woodbridge 60, Sussex Academy 19: The Blue Raiders used a 28-4, second-quarter run to take control of the Henlopen South game.
Reghan Robinson poured in 23 points, with five three-pointers, as nine players scored for Woodbridge.
Laurel 55, Early College 29: The Bulldogs out-scored the Hornets, 25-7, in the fourth quarter to close out the South victory.
Boys’ basketball
Caesar Rodney 54, Polytech 48: The Riders used an 18-8 run in the third quarter to build a nine-point lead in their third straight victory.
Craig Williams (15 points), Messiah Antwi (11 points, 6 blocks) and Anthony Aglio (10) all finished in double figures. Williams hit three three-pointers for CR, which out-scored the Panthers, 16-4, from the foul line.
Dorrell Little, who hit three threes, scored 14 points with Kyle Gamber adding 11 for the Panthers.
Seaford 47, Lake Forest 37: Tyrese Fountain and Brent Ricketts tallied 14 points apiece to pace the Blue Jays to their third win in the last four games.
Seaford, which sank 14-of-16 free throws, used a 14-8 third-quarter run to open up a nine-point lead.
Jackson Starkey, who went 7-of-10 from the foul line, scored 12 points for the Spartans with Amir Cooper adding 11.
Laurel 68, Early College 36: The Bulldogs out-scored the Hornets, 26-5, in the third quarter to take control.
Laurel’s Javier White netted 21 points with Kylse Wilson (16) and Nifere Griffin (10) also leading the way.
Khalil Kemp tallied 18 points to lead Early College.
Delmar 44, Indian River 40: The Wildcats improved to 5-2 overall with the Henlopen South win.
College bowling
DSU’s Reardon ninth in tourney: Delaware State freshman Sydney Reardon placed ninth out of 135 bowlers at the Northeast Classic in Deptford, N.J. over the weekend.
Reardon tallied 1,110 pins for an average of 222.00. Her best overall performance came in game three when she threw a 266.
The Hornets finished 10th out of 18 teams with a 7-6 record for the weekend. As a team, Delaware State knocked down 13,581 total pins averaging 202.7 per game.
College softball
UD’s Garber earns honor: Delaware senior Hanna Garber has been named to Extra Inning Softball’s Extra Elite 100 College Players for the upcoming season.
Garber became the seventh player in Blue Hen history to be named first-team All-Region when she earned the recognition in 2021. Garber, who started all but two games in centerfield, led the team with a .384 batting average and 38 hits to go with a CAA-best five triples last spring.
Delaware opens the season on Feb. 11 when the Blue Hens travel to Florida for the Stetson Lead Off Tournament.
